Sze Atelier: Black and White Inspired

As mentioned in our last post on our latest Sze Atelier Collection, we've designed some pieces of jewellery made from Swarovski crystals that allows our customers to custom-make them in the shades that they want.

We also mentioned how the current trends and fashion scene inspired us for this range. Below is a sample of one of the colour themes that inspired us for some of the pieces in the collection.

Black and White: Inspired by Posh Spice's stylish yet classic black Birkin. Kate Spade's flower petal pom-pom ring in black and white. Gucci's vintage sling handbag with it's prominent G logo. Gossip Girl inspired fashion statement neklace on Michelle Trachtenberg. Valentino's black and white print ad with a dreamy finish. And Gucci's ultra sexy model adorning the new Bamboo Top Handle Bag in plain black are some of the latest fashion that inspired our Silver Tea Leaf and Silver Dragonfly earrings.

Sze Atelier Collection

It's been four months. Two babies. 1) A bun that literally popped out of the oven. And 2) Sze Accessories' little own space.

I've finally braved through my confinement month and have began to settle into motherhood. Can't help the "Oh-I-See" blinking in exclamation, a reminder of mum's broken record of, "You'll understand when you're a mother!" No wonder mother's are revered time and again. Cause, it is tough being a mum and being put in charge of such fragility causes my knees to buckle. Putting aside, over-rated, stinky poo nappy changes, it is really a whole roll-out (as far and wide as the ocean) of other changes. And I'm happy to say that I'm sailing and cruisin' (who said, smoothly?) along... well, fine?

Regarding the second duckling in tow, it is actually an expansion from our online brand Sze Accessories. We have gone on ground, with Sze Atelier and officially have a permanant spot in a concept store called Kaleidoscope at Publika, Solaris Dutamas. Already dubbed the "artistic new mall" in town, this shopping complex is going to be vibrating with creative energy from all forms of the arts (when it official opens and is in full swing). Even the loo is covered in creative and artsy caricatures.

SZE ATELIER: Displayed at the store is a whole sparkly collection of Sze's own handmade designs under the Atelier Collection made with Swarovski Crystallized Elements. We have decided to work with these crystal beads as they are available in a myriad of colours, effects, shapes and sizes to play around with. They offer designers a fabulous palette of inspiration. And with this, we're allowing customers to semi-custom make pieces of their choice. We design the pieces but you get to choose to have them in your favourite colour.

HANDMADE WITH SWAROVSKI CRYSTALLIZED ELEMENTS: And although Sze Atelier has yet to attain an ingredient branding from Swarovski (yet), rest assured that we are getting our crystals from the official Swarovski suppliers in Malaysia. Many supply stores sell Swarovski crystals and beads, but they are not directly from Swarovski Malaysia. I would be weary of them because at one glance, China made crystals can be pretty deceiving. But when looked upon closely, the distinct quality and standards of these Swarovski crystals are distinguishable. Time will also tell, as their sparkles last for years to come. Below is a sample of our design followed by inspiration from highstreet and luxury fashion that has inspired us to create them.

DESIGN: Some of the designs are pretty straight forward and simple. Their classic stance allows you to invest in a piece that will take you a mile compared to the racks and racks of costume jewellery that last only for the season. These comfortable to wear pieces are meant to subtly complement the wearer and blend in with the ensemble instead of being overly flashy. Their glistering sparkle works in a quiet manner yet excudes a prominance of style.

Each piece is carefully designed after much research and inspiration from various fashion insights. The colours and designs are chosen and matched to the current fashion forecast to represent their timelyness. Below are some inspiring mood boards and the outcome after months of going through the whole motion, designing, purchasing of raw materials, mix matching and finally creating.

COLOUR CHOICES: The Sze Atelier collection is solely handmade (Sze Accessories is a mix of handmade and jewellery pieces that are sourced around the world). It is displayed and can be purchased at Kaleidoscope or through our Sze Accessories website at the moment. However, we will only be taking made-to-order orders, online via our website. And the great thing about it as mentioned above, is that you get to choose the colour of your liking for each particular design depending on the availability of the Swarovski crystals in that shade of your choice. Just refer to the below colour chart for the wide rainbow list of shades and you'll have no problem finding matching jewellery for your waredrobe anymore.

DELIVERY AND DURATION: It will take around 2-3 weeks (or less depending on how fast we get our crystal orders and make the designs) and we're not charging extra for this made-to-order service. The price of the piece is already inclusive of this customised service excluding the shipping rates which remains the same for Malaysia which is RM10 for 1-5 items. International shipping depends on weight and distance and will be adviced upon confirmation of the order.

Just thought I'd share a little something with you all since I've announced that I was expecting in a few of the previous blogs. And if you've caught on the news on my FB, you'll realise that I've already popped! It was a blessed and fast labour but now the real work of taking care of the little bud begins. Change in Courier Service Provider

Taking a little time to appologise to customers who have recently experienced a delay in receiving your parcels. No, it has nothing to do with me being 9 months pregnant. I have been consistently sending out the parcels on the following working day once payment has been received.

Really, I have no idea why POS MALAYSIA is such an incompetent courier service provider. My innitial praises for them and trust in their timeliness has diminished over the past few months. Parcels with correct addresses get returned to me incurring double postage on my end to re-send it out, causing a huge delay in customers receiving their goods. And parcels have been arriving later than 7-10 working days when, by right, they should arrive within 3-5 working days.

Tracking online their www.pos.com.my website has not been a walk in the park either because the system somehow lags and at times I'm unable to even Track and Trace. It also does not state in detail the delivery stages but notes down a few words like "despatch to 47400". Sorry, non-comprende! How do you expect a layman like me understand these postal code terms?

Emails to their customer service gets an automated reply that has nothing to do with my request. And a response to my actual request comes in only (many) days later with little or no responsibility taken. For instance, a recent parcel that was sent back to me, was apparently "delivered to sender on...". Having to track my Registered Post or Pos Daftar parcels is like looking for a missing needle in a hay stack.

Why bother with them in the first place? Well, innitially, I'd have to say, they did a really good job. No such thing as a missing parcel (fingers cross, so far, none have actually gone missing) and no delays. Customers never complained about not receiving the parcels within the week. And so I kept to them. But recently, Pos Malaysia has proved to disappoint big time. Even the system when posting the parcels at the Post Office is greatly flawed! Pos Malaysia has become a bill paying center with no focus on mailing services anymore. In fact, if you want to do mailing, you have to queue up with the rest of the world paying their summonses and bills, which sometimes amounts to more than an hour wait. I've writen in to their customer service pointing out the fact that there needs to be a designated counter attending to deliveries. Still, not implemented at most outlets.

So, after the ranting, I'm clearly not going to use Pos Malaysia anymore. Just in case they don't realise, there are other forms of courier services available. Yes, slightly pricier but at least I don't have to go through the headaches of such inefficiency and lackadaisical atttitude.

Moving forward, we will be using private courier service prodiver. We recently just registered with one. The good news is, for now, we will not be raising the delivery fees of RM10 for 1-5 items within Peninsular Malaysia and will advice otherwise for East Malaysia and International postings according to weight and distance. We will be commencing this service as soon as we receive our Address Bills and Sealed Plastic Envelopes.

Hopefully, you'll get your parcels pronto!

La Senza: Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign

When asked by a friend from FJ Benjamin (who handles the La Senza brand) to be apart of her campaign, I was pretty excited as I had never officially advocated any cause before. However, the clinch was that it was for Mother's Day and I had to get mom to participate. Knowing that mom leads a very private life, there was a bit of coaxing to do, in which, she relented for a good cause in the end. The shoot was a meaningful one as I had just found out that I was expecting. Yes, I'm about to be promoted to motherhood really soon. And since it was to be published in the month of mother's day, May 2011, I thought it couldn't be more apt!

Being preggars has been most fulfilling and I count it as a huge blessing. However, work has certainly taken a backseat. It's already mid July while I'm writing this. I took these pictures in March. They were published in May. Reason being, pregnancy is no walk in the park and currently, I'm super close to my due date. I have been taking lots of rest as this is my first child. So, business has been suffering but I believe God will provide. Afterall, the reason why I quit the corporate world was for this solely, that I can personally take care of my own child when the time came. Don't MIA on me as I'm still around. I'll just be taking things a little slower and concentrating on that which is more important. In life, SOMETHING has got to give! And it's very true in many cases.

Check out a slightly plump-er version of me below with my gorgeous swelt mother. She reckons that she looks a bit matured here. I think she looks a picture of poise :D Really hope to be like her one day :D

This La Senza campaign focused on getting women to realise that there is a prevention for cervical cancer. Like those BCG jabs that we use to get it school, getting this vaccine against cervical cancer is simply getting three doses of jabs in a period of 6 months. It's really that simple. I had mine years ago when I first read about it in the papers. Then it cost me about RM1, 300 for those three jabs. The price however has dropped considerably and is much cheaper at the government hospitals or clinics. Apparently, they will be introducing it free to female students too. After all, why not? Prevention is better than cure.

Despite the fact that you've gotten your jab (mine was Gardasil), don't forget your yearly pap smears. The jabs don't substitute the need for these detection test. Cervical cancer is a silent killer. It's so quiet that when most find out, they are usually at their last stage. So, what are you waiting for? A little pinch of the needle can save your life, your mother's, your sister's and your friend's.

This issue of Seventeen Malaysia focused on lots of white flowy dresses paired with straightforward silver and gold accessories that were subtle yet somewhat edgy. I'd say that this dreamy and misty look helps us cope with the extreme heat that's been rising these pass few weeks. Taken with a forest foliage background, this earthy fashion spread reminds us to always remember the environment around us for that better future. So, re-cycle and re-use as much as you can. It makes a difference.

Recently, been getting a lot of comments that I have a certain "glow" to my face. Well, I haven't been doing much of a change to my skincare regime, so this new serum definitely gets the limelight for the nice compliments. The product is light weight and easy to use, making my skin smoother and balancing out my uneven skin tone. Try it!

Innitially we thought that we were going to be doing only a few issues of this DIY segment with Feminine magazine. However, the feedback has been that, readers look forward to learning up on these DIY features. Which is why we have been continuously teaching them simple step-by-step techniques on how to make beautiful accessories at a small budget, from home.

Sze's Display at Robinsons, The Gardens

Finally we have set up our new batch of stocks at Robinsons, The Gardens. Unlike our previous experience, set up was during store hours which made it pleasant as the lights and air condition were still on. No sweat! :D Aside from that, other store assistance were around and were uber helpful! Also, I had Naomi Lim ex-owner of Tea & Sympathy owner to help me with her excellent mechandising and display skills.

Best of all, Robinsons provided existing display shelves making it hassle-free to display all our lovelies. The shelves have glass casing to avoid pilferage but on the top of the casing, there is a perspex on-counter display with back lighting that envelopes and illuminates the jewellery in a soft ambience. The on-counter display allows for you to pick up the pieces to try. We've got two very helpful sales assistance, Nabilah (morning shift) and Liyana (afternoon shift) who are more than willing to help with the ones in the glass casing.

Origins Plantscriptions Launch

Recently I was invited to do a shoot for an Origin's launch for their newest product on shelf- Plantscription. Before the shoot, we were invited for a private launch of the product where Origin's Sales & Training Manager, Susan Khor ran through a thorough presentation with us on what the product was all about. Later we were given a truck full of products suited to our skintype to try with this new anti-anging serum!"

In their own words: "Although it's not a prescription, in just 4 weeks nature's next generation power plant noticeably reduces wrinkle length & depth. Without the irritation. In the next few months, after much improvements to our skin, we were called in for a photoshoot. No, it was not a before and after shoot. It was a really fun one where all the participants had to rate the product on a scale to of 1-10. 10 being the best. How did I rate the product? Well, you'll just have to pop into the Origin's store at The Gardens Mid Valley later this month to see the in-store posters for yourself.

Until then, here are a handfull of the products that I tried and tested (and lurf!!). Aside from all the great effects on my skin, I can't help but be a lady about the packaging. The simple, straight line packaging has inspired me to create some new pieces from a new found technique that I learnt last year. These wirework techniques are so difficult to master. But once I did, I was pretty addicted to it. I made them while watching the tele until there were blisters on my fingers (thank goodness there's always Origins, Make a Difference Rejuvenating Hand Lotion). The pieces are painstalkingly handcrafted and required a lot of time. But alas, they are gorgeously pretty. Check them out below..

Above: Before I started trying out Origins facial care items, I was always a huge fan of their bath & body care selection. I use their scrubs, body wash and moisturisers a whole lot. My favourite is the Gloomaway, Grapefruit Body Souffle which smells so tangy it perks me up. And the texture is just heavenly to apply. So, inspired by the product, I created this Zesty pair of earrings under our Tangerine Collection.

Just reading the labels make me salivate. Think juicy fruits like apricots, coconut, mango, orange, and promegranate. Such was the inspiration for all things fruity and colourful, I created this Sunshine ring under our Tangerine Collection. It matches the Zesty pair of earrings above.

Above: My favourite skincare product would be- Starting Over which is an age erasing moisturiser. As I age (yes, I admit, pretty old), this product helps to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It is lightweight and easy to glide on. Doesn't really leave a sticky residue. Love it! Thus, I made two pairs of earrings just thinking about it. Cherry Blossoms and Cotton Candy can be found under our Pink Collection.

Dinner at Shook! Starhill was an invitation from Designer Bridal Room (DBR) where Sze got her duppion silk Manuel Mota for Pronovias (coincidentally the gown is made in Barcelona, Spain) wedding gown from. Like most girls who grew up dreaming of prince charming and white horses, it was a wedding to remember. More to share in the near future *winks*

After a year of blissful marriage, in appreciation to the customers, DBR decided to host a thematic dinner, titled "Passage Through Time" with Carrera Y Carrera to thank their customers for the support they had given them.

As with all things, YTL at Starhill's Feast Village, Kuala Lumpur, it was a dinner of quiet style, light clinking of glasses and fancy plated gastronomy. To add to the romantic ambience was harpist, Katie Targett-Adams, the honour of the company of Spanish Ambassador, Jose Ramon Baranano and a young gracious couple Robin Ang and Dianna Lee who are about to tie-the-knott in the very near future. Also dining on the same table was Theresa Manavalan, Editor of Sunday People, NST.

Good food, great company, gorgeous jewellery and graceful gowns. A perfect concoction to a splendid night out.

Here we've got the latest magazine in store- Gorgeous braving the sea of already saturated counters of glossies. Well, what becomes a real challenge to them to stand out, is really our blessing. Clinique's Seventeen Teen Party (Jan 2011)

This year (2010), we again collaborated with Clinique skincare and Seventeen magazine for their annual Clinique Sweet Seventeen Party in January 2011.

The theme this year was floral and thus everything from the venue, decorations, dress code, makeup colours and even our D-I-Y pieces were in sync. And the girls walked away with door gifts worth RM400 of Clinique goodies. Aside from that, they won other Clinique products such as bottles of Clinique's Happy Fragrance, bags from Le Sport Sac, free Celebrity Fitness tryouts and hairstyling by A Cut Above.

They were back with more exciting activities and programmes lined up for a group of 70 young ladies including, Clinique Skincare and Makeover session, hairstyling, lunch, discussion, talks, take home poloroid pictures, dance sessions, contest and of course a D-I-Y session with Sze Accessories. I've been MIA for a while. Well, blame it on the festivity and holiday period. Back to back months of celebrations from the end of last year to finally settling down after Chinese New Year last month. As such, the consequences are- backlog. So much work, I don't know where to start :D

But firstly, I just want to take the opportunity to thank a wonderful brand under the FJ Benjamin group, Celine for the lovely gift- a ladies semi-leather wallet in the classic Celine monogram, that I received. Really didn't expect anything but it was presented to a few other ladies that were featured in a magazine writeup for a Celine bag collection eons ago.

It took me a while after it was published to head over to the publishers to collect the gift and have only been recently using it. It's lovely. Thank you so much. I*heart* my celine wallet.

Another 3 more days to Christmas. What a jolly feeling! Can't wait to celebrate the day with loved ones and friends. Bet church is going to be lots of fun too at this time of the year. Family dinners and get togethers always bring such warmth and closeness. Am really looking forward to it.

This year has passed by too fast and I can't say that I'm feeling much ofthe Christmas vibe. Don't seem to hear the Christmas Carols jinggling at malls much this season. The only place I'll probably find lots of carolling will probably be at DUMC (Damansara Utama Methodist Church). Christmas Collection in Gold

Seeing how we have a lot of customers asking for our handmade accessories, I sat myself down for the past couple of weeks (after my sourcing trips) to come up with these classy pieces. I realise that there were a string of request for subtle and simples pieces. So, here you go, some really pretty pieces for this sparkly Christmas season.

Perfect for Christmas gifts, the Friendship bracelets made of suede come in gold and silver pendants whilst the straps come in pink, blue, brown and peach. Check them out under our Pink, Eau, Brown and Tangerine Collections. They are so classy and light to wear. Put on a few layers for that uber cool look.

Another of our favourite, is undoubtedly our dangling earrings. This time round, we used Swarovski crystals to upgrade from glass crystals to better quality ones. They come in the same pendants as the Friendship bracelets, so these can be purchased in a set matchingly paired together.

And then we have our necklaces. Simple, long slinky ones with intricate pendants. Worn layered with other necklaces or by itself, these necklaces shout luxe and are great to pair with casual t-shirts or formal dresses. Bangles are still top of the list for accessories. Aside from the non-intrusive earrings (I think, they have the least body contact), bangles are second to the most comfy pieces to wear. Necklaces are great when you're in an air-conditioned room, but in humid weather, it can get in the way, a wee bit.

How many times do you see these 3 words and cringe about the thought of buying a Malaysian designed item? I have to admit that I am guilty of purchasing international brands that have been brought to our shores through freetrade import. These brands not only saturated us with choices, it drowns out our local business. Therefore, over the years, I've been trying and learning to support Malaysian designers (well, how do you think they will succeed without it?) and looking within our country first when making a buying decision. Not many Malaysian names might be making it big overseas (yet) but it's sure sending a ripple through our land.

Fashion is such a thriving hub of creativity that is constantly changing (monthly and not even seasonally anymore). Which means, a lot of time, effort and $$$ has to constantly be pumped in to keep afloat (what more succeed?). Not only are the huge brands with tones of resources suffering, but they are stamping out pre-mature budding talents. Which is why I am (personally) thankful for local efforts that pick up and promote local potential in our country. With these support, it becomes more encouraging for local designers to improve our quality and standards. No more are the days of producing lower end goods. To compete in the international arena, we really need to buck up.

And in terms of the on slaughter of international competition, all I can say is that it is always going to be there. Whether or not you choose to compete, it will still remain a fact. And it is safe to say that, we don't really have a choice whether or not we "want" to compete. Someone out there is going to want to be better than you all the time. And it is no biggie being the "first" anymore.

Saying all that, leads to my awe for Ode to Liberty, a local fashion site that is big on supporting local fashion designers. And (boy!!!) are they good! From Malaysian Fashion Designers that range from couture (Baharim), to pret-a-porter (Justin Chew), shoes and bags (Yiu Lin from Klutched/Shoes Shoes Shoes) and of course accessories (Sze Accessories).

One look at the website and the designers that they've chosen to feature, makes you take a second glance. Are they really from Malaysia? Yes, yes and yes!!! So, all I want to say, in short, even when shopping, think about home first and see how you can make it a better place!

It's the season to be jolly (with the help of some bubbly)! Wow! End of the year for 2010 is coming to a close sooner than we can say Feliz Navidad. A pretty recent contender in the market, Queen magazine, has a Taiwanese feel to the content compared to its sister magazine Mina, which has a Japanese one. Apparently, most of their contents also comes from the overseas market which makes it a jam pack magazine (thus the more premium price) with lots of information from around the asian region on DIYs that you can try at home. From how to apply your makeup to sweeping up your hair into chignons and applying falsh lashes, these detailed step-by-steps make learning the ropes on how to beautify yourself so much fun!

Which brings to mind, perhaps I should contribute to one of the magazines for their step-by-step columns? It would be great to share some knowledge along the way. After all, education and learning new things are an on going process that you should not stop, right?

New Tide October 2010

Recently, a friend commented that she chanced upon a blog and thought she was reading mine. She said that the owner of the blog seemed to be immitating my style of putting up our "Media Highlights" and thanking the publications. It was subtle but obvious. (Get what I mean?) For me, putting up these magazines are a way for me to update customers, friends and family members on what I've been up to. But for some, it's obviously a must-have to follow. *shrugs*

Lately, I've been seeing so many designers and artist friends ranting about how their works are being imitated and copied because they publish them on their website, blogs, social networks...ect...ect and it makes me wonder whether it's worth all the effort? Is it worth it for me to be placing so many of my pieces online only to have others follow suit? And is it worth "their" efforts to even bother putting up something so similar?

Copying someone's website layout, web content, blog template, product design just takes the creative juice out of the game. I've not been oblivious to some very blatant (but subtle) follow-me(s) but I've chosen to stick by the "immitation is the best form of flattery" approach. And just because I've not gone down to a face-to-face confrontation does not mean I'm extremely pleased about it. Saying that, I'm sure that nobody would be if they had put in much thought, research, time, sweat, tears...only to have others mirror it. Poor luxury brands like LV, Prada, Chanel, Gucci...I feel you!

Anyway, I think creativity comes with a price. And unfortunately we can't stop others from wanting to be as good as we can be. We can only strive to put in more oomph in hopes that we're always a step ahead. While at it, we can always count our blessings. In this case, it's in the form of media support like the one below who definitely know how to appreciate some locally handmade pieces :D

This stylist is a very good friend of mine. She's got really quirky taste. From the mix and matches that she's achieved in these spread you can tell, she's not your typical "safe" fashionista. Personally I like the change in style and will most definitely try it one day. And it's also a good change for Sze customers who like me are pretty classic when it comes to dressing and accessorising. But once in a while, a pop of accessories here and there makes an outfit more interesting! :D

Hello sunshine! It's the weekends! Yes!!!

Sometimes I feel like I wanna just pack up and head off to a remote beach just to chillax! The tension from the week just wears me out and I wanna scream, ice cream???

The first to be featured on 1st Avenue's (new mall in Penang) webbie is none other than... 10,10,10,10 ...me! How cool is that? When I did the shoot, I didn't even know I was first in line :D But yes, the newly launched website tied up with Sisters magazine to feature 4 different styles of clothings from a personality periodically.

I kinda knew about this a while ago but never got the time to settle down and blog. Yes, bloggin does take up a lot of time! Try it! :P So, in the midst of it, I got an sms from a Penang friend, saying, "Check out this site. You've been featured!" So, it goes to say that this website does get it's fair share of online visitors!

Anyway, it was great to share with Sisters Pic about how I usually dress up for different occassions. Honestly, on a day-to-day basis, I'm more of a t-shirt and shorts kinda girl but on certain occassions when I have to go out and meet someone, I take it up a notch or two. And there are always those events where you have to really dress like a "bird" (there's a Chinese saying). All said, I think dressing in this time and age has become extremely personal and individualistic. For me, fundamentally, it boils down to comfort!

As some of you might know, we've had the opportunity to test the retail market by supplying to a Japan store at KLCC, Isetan. Being in there meant that we had to have stock loads of goodies to meet certain sales requirements. Therefore with that opportunity, we tried the market with a wider range of "accessories" aside from our in house designed one. And the response was positive.

"Fashion accessories are decorative items that supplement one's garment, such as jewelry, gloves, handbags, hats, belts, scarves, watches, sunglasses, pins, stockings, bow ties, leg warmers, leggings, neckties, suspenders and tights." -Wikipedia-

Appologies for all the backlog of media highlights. Was away on a long honeymoon in Europe during the month of September. I could have worked while on holiday but I refused to bring my laptop along. Just as much as any person who works in a 5-9 job has the right to fully relax, this homebody had to take a breaker too.

Below was a shoot we (Jayen together with Phyllis Sim) did for Cittabella mag. It was such a pleasant coincident cause we didn't plan to meet up. But fate always brings the best of friends and people together. *winks* I personally think it was a divine appointment that Jayen whom I've known since kindie happened to be scheduled for the shoot right after me. We didn't know about this until we were at the studio. Of course we were elated and screamed away like little kids when we saw each other.

It was doubly joyful when Phyllis Sim (Chinese local Malaysian actress) walked in. She happened to recognise me cause she is a Sze Accessories customer. As for me, I couldn't recognise her because I only know names from the order forms and can't tell from faces. We clicked instantly and from there onwards couldn't stop chatting and chatting like two long lost friends. Phyllis runs a boutique of her own in Desa Park City called Miel and it stocks the some really gorgeous dresses. Can't wait to go over there sometime soon!

But the blue Topshop blouse was probably chosen cause I mentioned that I like the colour blue. And the flowery Esprit top was possibly picked for it's satin material, which I dig! 8TV 8 Style 4: Merdeka: Theme Yellow

Two of the hairtie pieces below were created for another 8TV's 8 Style 4 interview for Merdeka Day. Director Tian Xing wanted to created a theme around the colours of the Malaysian flag, so he got different individuals to talk about a particular colour and ours was yellow. (Ohhhh...I love that Cold Play song).

It's a priviledge and an honour to be recognise for work well done. I'm extremely grateful for this support. Thank you Mindy, Shanti and the team at Marie Claire, Blu Inc for selecting me as one of the 10 Women of Substance and Style for the year 2010. Being chosen last year for Martell's Rising Personality Awards was already such a pleasant suprise but to be recognise as someone who has fashion sense (*winks in style*) coupled with brains, is totally exhilarating! .

Funnily, I don't quite consider myself as an entrepreneur (such a big word for such a small person). I just keep stiving to do my best and give it my all. But with everything I've put in, it's really meaningful to have people say, "Hey, I see what you're doing, and it is fineeee!", makes it worthwhile.

But saying that, I still feel like I am really not the person to go to for advice on business. I'm in the trial and error department. Everything that I have done thus far, is an attempt. Attempting to succeed but failing many times along the way. Which brings to mind a book my 'then' fiance had me read. It's called Failing Forward. It was an encouragement for me during my lowest times when people could not understand what I was working on. So, with each tumbling step I take (even now), I get up and continue to push myself forward and I suppose that is what keeps me going (still a long way to go...). I don't have any short cuts or secret formulas to "success". I'm traditional- give your best in whatever you do and in the end, it will come back to you.

Other than that, I have Jesus to thank for it. For without Him, I am nothing. Prayer has done wonders in my life. So, whenever I'm down, I get on my knees (not literally all the time) and God is there for me. He always has my back. And that is such a great assurance and comfort to me. I hang on to his promises in the Bible with my favourite verse as below.

Travelling is always a great time to trend watch and see what other nations are dolling up for the season. The most recent trip to SINGAPORE was a pleasant eye candy seeing how the Singaporeans love to shop.

Choices are amass! I feel a headache coming each time I'm in one of the malls. But good thing, we have guides in the form of fashion magazines helping us decide, whats in for the season. So, I picked out my fav, Elle Singapore and picked up a few accessory trends that I thought you'd like to know.

I've also pieced together some pieces that we are selling at Isetan Gardens until the 26th Aug 2010 right next to the spotted trends. Another fun trip with lots of new things and old (re-visited). Again , Singapore never fails to amuse me with lots of newness and constant change. Not sure when I'll head back again, but for now, browsing the Lonely Planet Europe will be top of my list for a upcoming (long awaited) honeymoon!

Above: With much inspiration from my friend Jerry Chan. Our brightly decorated counter in our intepretation of the Bohemian theme for this season. Bright burst of colours and a sunny feel. Note the (hawaiann) bikinis, (polka dotted) bags, (bow) hairbands, (colourful boho string) earrings and (tan) belts. The bright boho theme always makes it feel like summer all over again. Then again, lucky us, we've got summer all year round!

Above: More boho inspired items in brown and neutral tones that contrast with the otherwise bright sunny colours. On the dot with Channel's latest boho runway show, as browns mixed with a jumble of hues are the way to go this season. Note, gorgeous tan (faux) leather belts, natural coloured feather (faux) hairbands and bronzy string earrings for that perfect boho goddess!

As you can see from the above, we've expanded our range of accessories to not only include jewellery but brought in other accessories like quirky fedora hats in white (brown is everywhere!), leather waist clincher belts, wire hair wraps in an array of materials, colourful beach bags and even some really hot leather clutches. After all the months of distractions, I finally settled down to make some intricate pieces that are bolder in colour with some interesting nick nack charms. I attempted at making more gold jewelry which I've begin to realise are a fresh touch to the otherwise common silverware. An exotic colourful range arose from my otherwise black and white Audrey Hepburn stlye mantra. An indie touch of contrasting and oposing shades come together to form a rainbow of harmony.

Inspired by the high shine of high grade Swarovski crystals, this collection of opulent gold pieces are a class above the rest. Made only using Swarovski and Semi-Precious stones, they exude a stance of elegance. Eng Hang, Fashion Writer from Sister's magazine called to ask if I'd like to share some of my style tips by picking out some pieces of clothing from Padini's Concept Store Outlet. They would put together this selection of clothings that shout my style (*boomz*) on one page together with accessories that I would throw in to spice it up. Of course, we had to include a piece or two from Sze Accessories.

I agreed and the story continues, when I got to the store for the shoot that morning, not only was our dear friend already there, he had selectively placed a collectiong of clothings on a rack, all mixed and matched to my style. Suprise, suprise! And he kinda nailed it right on the dot. You see, I was suppose to go there and pick my own clothes. He didn't even have to lift a finger. But he made my work easier, and I didn't have to look around too much.

"How did you know what I would like?" in which he answered, "I did a bit of research and realise that you like classic pieces with a womanly touch."

At least some people still put in the effort to know what you like even though they didn't have too, to begin with. But his professionalism made him deliver more than he needed too and that is not about just meeting my expectations but delivering above expectations. Too many fail to realise that, that is the key to greater excellence.

Well done Eng Hang! I was pretty impressed that he did his homework before hand. What a nice chap too! Oh btw, he's got great complexion! Makes me green with envy ;)

Secondly, stop carrying your reusable shopping bags while piling it with new clothes every week. Talk about being eco friendly, disposable fashion is totally uncool. And the, "I-can-only-be-seen-wearing-this-once-in-my-Facebook-album" has already done so much damage to the earth by depleting it of it's resources just to meet our idea of being fashion forward by discarding last season's wears.

I try to only buy items that I know will last me a decade :P Call me a granny, but well, at least I'm penny wise ;P And lastly, well, be a smart consumer. Buy only when you have a need. Now I have to go and repeat that mantra to myself. Let's walk the talk and be eco concious.

8 Style 4 Interview with 988 DJ Xin Yin

I'm sorry! I should have mentioned this earlier so that you could have caught it on 8TV when it aired. But I was out of town last weekend for a friend's wedding in Malacca and had no access to the internet. Therefore, I need to get an iPhone soon. *hint hint * (to hubby) so that I can always update you on the go, where ever I am.

Tian Xing, producer for 8 Style 4, a Chinese program that features stylist and all things fashion called one day and asked if I'd like to do a TV interview with them. The catch is, it's in Mandarin. Being brought up in an English speaking environment, I was super panicky. I speak very little mandarin (pu thong hua) with my cousins and often get laughed at because I mix my Mandarin and Cantonese like the banana that I am (white on the inside but yellow on the out).

But I managed to get help from Chinese speaking friends and in a day or two, translated most of what I wanted to say into written language. The problem was, I could hardly remember the words I translated and ended up using English for most of the time anyway. So much for all the preparation! But it was better than not being prepared.

Language aside, I was asked to do a DIY Step-By-Step with the host Xin Yin during the interview. Another hurdle as lots of preparation was needed to avoid time wastage (although, really, it can be edited out). I spend days doing up the actualy pieces that I was going to teach her, prepared pieces done half way and also put out all the tools for use.

Xin Yin is such a professional. Most of the time, I couldn't catch the torrent of Chinese words flying out of her mouth at 180kmp/hr. You should catch some of my expressions on screen. You can actually tell that I'm pretending to know what she's talking about, or not (cause I hid it well). *wink* Basically, I was quite the train wreck inside, appearing calm on the out.

Anyway, we made some really cool bibs using my acrylic bases and managed to make it easy for just about anyone to make them at home. I'm sure if Xin Yin can do it, you should be able too. I don't think she would have made it with arts and crafts. Her glue applications were horrendous.

So, thank goodness, she's a super popular host and not a jewelry designer :P

As below, finally, did a shoot with Female after almost two years. They did one when Sze Accessories first started (January 2008) and featured some of our stuff too (December 2007). Lately, in 2010, they have given us more miledge and support. This is a great step to seeing Sze Accessories getting recognise in the top English women's magazine in Malaysia. Vice versa, seeing local magazines promote local brands. Great support Female! :)

This interview by Wan Lee, freelance writer for Female, comes with insights into life as a Jewelry Designer working from home. There are some juicy bits that I don't usually share inserted subtly into the interview. On another note, I got a message from a friend in the middle of the night, "Hey, you're in Female. Erm...are you pregnant?". So, to make things clear, no I'm not pregnant and no I don't have children yet, although the interview sort of stipulates a very homey-mo-mey feel. LOL! The dress kinda makes me look a bitttt...fleshy? Will only start to think about babies next year ;P As for fleshy, I've been hitting the gym to stay healthy.

Sze Accessories Private Preview Party

Upon request from Martell's Brand Manager, William Lee, to host a party for his friend, I threw a little preview party on fine Saturday afternoon for some of his closest "girl" friends. He has been trying to arrange this preview for ages. Actually, since the begining of the Martell Rising Personality when some of his friends asked if they could see my physical pieces.

With lots on his plate and having to schedule a bunch of women together, it was postphoned for the longest time. But in the end, we managed to finally get down to it. So, my husband kindly allowed us to throw a chocolate fondue get together that consisted of women's two "most" favourite things- chocolates and jewelry. Well, I actually like flowers too! :)

While planning for the party, I actually went all the way down to Singapore to source for some nice semi-precious stones and crystals to make new pieces for this "special" preview. Knowing that the ladies would appreciate one-off pieces that were not found else where, I got to working for an entire week, making gold pieces with lots of pop and bright colours that were in fashion.

When the weekend came, the condo was turned into a little jewelry boutique. Funny, someone asked, "Are they always displayed on a daily basis?". Actually, no, cause I keep most of my jewelry in zip-lock bags to keep them from any contact with air, which protects them and helps keep them shiny for a longer period of time.

I'll definitely be previewing some of those special pieces online, so not to worry! While waiting for it to be posted up, have a look at our little soiree as below...

I hope they had fun. It was great having them for the weekend just to showcase my available pieces as well as the specially designed collection from Singapore. They also went back with a few of my gem pieces at special pricing which really made my day. One of it was the Space Necklace which was my favourite handmade necklace that I designed and wore for the Cittabella Shoot in Jan 2010. This necklace was also featured in Mina's February 2010 issue as below.

Seventeen April 2010

One of my favourite magazines growing up was Seventeen. 15 years ago, I use to buy them every month. I was imported and then they were retailing at RM17.00. Quite hefty. But these international ones were a great big open window to the outside world. Seventeen and Girlfriend were my style bible for years and I kept them in mint condition, in my cupboard, nicely stacked by month...followed by year- with pride!

But lucky you! Now we've got our own version in Malaysia, featuring fashion pieces already available here on our shores. Imagine how it was then? All the drooling had no means to it's ends. No way to get the pieces in Msia thus resulting in a lot of local attempts at those coveted brands. Not anymore. Now we've got internation brands as well as upcoming local brands that we can easily get our hands on.

Seventeen mag has so kindly offered to feature Sze Accessories pieces in their issues following Sze Accessories colloration at the teen party they threw for Clinique this year at Roots Lot 10. And we're really glad to see our pieces being featured to the young and feisty readers of Seventeen mag. See below...

Last Friday morning, I woke up to my husband saying to someone on the phone "Nooo, she's here". Seeing my puzzled and sleepy face, my husband quickly answered, "You're on air" and rushed out to pump the radio up.

"Oh, it's Monday already!" I retorted, remembering that BMF was suppose to air the interview with Jeevan Sahadeven that morning. And so we both jumped out of bed, scurried into the living room and realised that it was just an annoucement to say that the interview was "coming up".

By the time, hubs got ready, had breakfast and left for work, I was still sitting on the couch waiting for the "coming up" interview to come on :) *yawn* I was about half asleep on the couch when, I heard my own sweet little radio voice (As if! *rolls eye*). Earthy Elements

Estee Lauder, Beautiful Earth Campaign

After reading about the oil spillage in the Gulf Coast of the United States of A, I was so geared up when my friend Jean Loh, Senior Special Events Manager of Estee Lauder Companies (ELC), invited me to the launch of ELC's environmental innitiative this year. I was so heart broken over the fact that tonnes of oil was gushing into the water with no hopes of containing it that I felt so compelled to at least make an "indirect" difference.

Just yesterday, The Star reported that despite efforts of trying to plug the spitting hole, they (won't name names) have failed miserably. And today's news was that, the oil will continue to spill into the sea until the month of August. This is partially because, it will take them (the people responsible) two whole months to drill another hole in the vicinity to reduce the pressure of this humpback one. A whole two months of oil covering the surface of the waters, suffocating the living life out of the poor sea world, is... just traggic.

You think the tanker colliding and causing the oil spill in Singapore is bad, well think very hard about this. It is devastating. And there's nothing you can do to save the environmental damage already caused, right? Well technically, you can, even if we're not directly involved in spooning the oil out of the sea. We can certainly play our part by putting in place, things that can reverse the effects of the damages. Are you still with me?

I'll try to relate in layman terms what I learnt today (with my very beautiful preggar friend, Sook Wei) at the ELC Beautiful Earth Campaign. Firstly, their company's focus this year was the mangroove forest in Malaysia. What do these "minority" forest have to do with the Reverse Uno? To state point blankly, these mangrove forest actually absorb pollution and filter the air. It actually takes the rubbish that we (YES WE!!) pollute our earth with and slowly reverse it. Like a purifyer. One mature tree gives out the cooling effects of 10 air-conditions units. With the rate of global warming and the constant smog we are covered in, you'd want to be very sure these trees stay and not only stay, but that new ones are replanted constantly.

And if you're alike me, and don't have green fingers (I just killed two pretty pots of flowers last week *sad* ), don't worry, ELC is not asking you to plant them yourselves by giving you seedlings. LOL! You can however, give RM25 to them in return that they plant a tree on your behalf. Wow! What more can you ask for? You just have to dip your hands into your 2.55 Channels. What do you get in return? Well (2.55 Channel owner), duh, precious clean AIR! And to top it, a very funky (I'm seriously in love with it) reusable grocery bag to thank you for your contribution! It was cooler than the ones I've seen at the grocers (and way cooler than expensive branded bags) :P so I got two!

Check them out from today till the end of June 2010 at Mid Valley and hop on over to the new LV store (opening soon) at The Gardens. That's plenty of time to head on down, but don't procrastinate! :)

Despite having to leave the house way before my husband, it was an awesome morning to boot. Thank goodness, there was also valet right at the event area! *Phew*. Going has made me realise, that I NEED to be more vigilant about seperating my trash, saying no to one-off plastic bags, bringing my tumbler instead of buying bottled water and switching off all unused electricity. And, I also need to make sure I cultivate green fingers of my own *wink*

For the later part I'm thinking of designing some Sze Accessories re-usable enveloped and bags for when I SEND you your goodies! And for the very, very much later part, I might consider a Chanel. The Star Properties: Sze's Abode

Last year around Dec 09, Willy from The Star properties emailed me to ask whether he could feature my condo. To which I replied, "It is actually my fiance's place". I didn't think it was appropriate then as we were not living together. I was also in the midst of a very crucial planning stage of my wedding. So, I actually said no innitially and tried delaying it (hoping that Willy would forget) and pushing it till after March 2010.

But persistence does pay off and Willy didn't forget. Infact, he called me the very week after my wedding. "Sze, can we please feature your house?" I was so shocked that he remembered.

Reporters! But well, Willy knows I absolutely adore him. A really nice guy to boot. And we seem to get along really well. Chatted with him for about 3 hours before we even got any work done. Found out that he had no first name. His name was simply "Willy" and boy did that get him into lots of trouble when applying for work, Visa, at the customs, at school...ect..ect. People always thought he was being a diva. But in actual fact, he really didn't have a first name. I laughed myself silly over all the incidents that he had over his name.

Anyway, it was all in the name of fun for me and in the end, it didn't even get published in the actual papers. It was however online The Star website under their Property section. So, here's a little sneak peak into my world :)

Finally got to meet up with MSN's Editor-In-Chieft, Cheryl Ow (ex-Female, Lifestyle Editor) who is back from her two year stint in Hong Kong. Lydia Kwan, Lifestyle and Fashion Writer for MSN was there as well to articulate the interview. It was a great catchup session with Cheryl whom I haven't seen for a long time. And I prepared for before hand with a little bit of my own research, so I was looking forward to sharing my insights.

Innitially, when they requested for an interview to predict the season's jewelry fashion, I was a bit sceptical about myself. It was unusual but I suppose it was expected as I AM suppose to know my stuff. (If you get what I mean?) I suppose, they think I should know it all about jewelry, with me knowing how to make them to begin with. But truthfully, I might like designing jewelry but I doubt I'm that "great" a crystal ball gazer. Nonetheless, I tried my best at "guessing" what's in at the moment and gave it my best shot (with some research to back me up, but of course). You be the judge of the interview by having a read of it below.

The jewellery designer talks about Spring/Summer trends, Malaysian women’s accessorising mistakes and how to embellish a simple outfit.THE SPRING/SUMMER 2010 TREND

In terms of design, multi-chained necklaces are slowly picking up. The Bangkok stocks that are being sold at flea markets tend to have these layered chains, but in smaller versions. I also found that a lot of designers are still doing dangly earrings from my research. The styles are different - matured and funky, heavy at the top or heavy at the bottom - but it's still all about slinky long earrings.

As for details, studs are so in. People think it's very punk-rock but I find it's more modernised now. It's not as sharp and edgy as it used to be; it's more subtle today. Clasps are also being replaced by ribbons as it's more feminine and the length is easier to adjust.

Colours are also bright and contrasting such as turquoise and orange. I find that people like mixing turquoise with orange or purple. I also notice a lot of earthly elements such as wings, feathers, birds, and roses. They're very symbolic.

THE MALAYSIAN FASHION SCENE

The Malaysian market
Since a majority of us are Malays, a lot of them wear rings and bangles because their heads are covered with a "tudung" or head scarf.

Mistakes of Malaysian women who accessorise
They don't match properly, and some go for very cheap, plastic items. It's hard to find people who wear expensive jewellery in Malaysia.

How people with limited funds can look classy with accessories
Buy one piece that is in line with current trends and recycle it for parties or for a day out. Also, if you put aside a certain budget for accessories and prioritise it and it could be the other way around. You can buy plain clothes and spend more money on accessories. Accessories can really change the whole look on an outfit.

"I'd rather spend money on clothes than accessories"
It's slowly changing. I suppose stores like Diva and Vincci Accessories are making people accessorise more. From there, I suppose they'll eventually migrate upwards. It's a starting point.

HOW TO DRESS

Don't over accessorise
Go for statement pieces. People nowadays want one-off pieces so they don't have to wear too much.

Multi-purpose accessories
I don't think there's a certain jewellery piece that can be used throughout the day. Accessories really need to match your attire.

A statement piece for corporate woman
Necklaces; they're nice and loud but they don't get in the way.

A statement piece for a party chick
Bib necklaces. They're big, loud and different. You can also be really artsy with it.

Matching white tank top and jeans
Finish the look with a long mesh bib-like necklace with a ribbon tie back. In terms of trends, it's all in one and not too loud.

Advice for plain Jane's who don't accessorise
Go for classic pieces. Choose plain silver classic items that you can keep for the next season and that will not go out of style. One or two fashionable statement pieces is enough.

Project DIY

So, every brand you see out there has one form or another of their own marketing materials. So, my friends and I from Swag Dolls, thought it would be cool to try and get some professional shots of their clothes and my accessories so that we can have a set of our own shots. This is where this little DIY project came about. It was the brainchild of Jayen who was ex-senior fashion writer for Marie Claire Malaysia. Turned out to be awesome loads of fun. We did "kuli" things like steam ironing clothes, matching the attire, gearing and beautifying our model Rain (not like she needed much of it) and basically just photographing. Oh and trying on Swag Doll's vintage clothes of course! :) This was a FIRST. It was lots of work and very hard work indeed. So, hopefully in the future, we will find some extra time to continue this effort again. But till then, wait up, the actual shots for this round will be posted soon. At the mean time, enjoy our behind the scene shots first :)

Bibs were once synonymous to babies and apple sauce but now they are worn by grown ups and particularly hot on the streets of the "big apple". Not an easy trend to carry of but with a simple t-shirt or a clean neckline, add a bib necklace, and you'll be changing the whole look of your top or dress. It's really that simple.
